Things To Do

Whale Watching

Each spring between the first of March through to late April some 20,000 gray whales migrate north to their summer feeding grounds in Alaska. Some pass close enough to shore to be easily watched right from the Inn. Many gray and humpback whales actually stay in the area so they are visible from March right through November. We have a powerful set of tripod-mounted binoculars that allow you to follow the whales as they swim past the Inn. For a close encounter with the whales we recommend that you take a tour with our local experts.

Sea Kayaking

Ucluelet has been a paddler’s paradise as far back as when the Nootka Indians traveled these waters in great ocean-going cedar canoes. The 100 small islands comprising the Broken Group Islands have beaches, lagoons, a large resident eagle community and many hidden channels virtually free of currents. There are many options available to you from a 3 hours Harbour tour to an all day adventure to the Broken Group Island that includes lunch on a deserted island. Majestic Kayaking can take you to these fantastic locations whether you are a beginner or experienced kayaker.

The Wild Pacific Trail

The waves seen here are products of a recent winter storm. This point is a magical spot to watch the BIG waves, whales or huge freighters on their way across the Pacific ocean. The Wild Pacific Trail winds along the rugged coast from a position just out of this picture and offers views unparalleled anywhere in the world. The trail can be accessed right from the end of our driveway. As a courtesy we will supply you with detailed trail maps. You have the option to do Phase I a 2.5km. loop or the more ambitious Phase II a 4.5km. hike.

Surfing

The Pacific Rim National Park Reserve is the surfing capital of Canada. The long, open shoreline with rolling swells makes it a perfect spot for those who love to ride the waves.

Surfing is done year round because the ocean temperature stays around 50ºF/10ºC all year. The water may be a little chilly, but in the last 10 years wetsuit technology has come a long way making surfing a lot warmer and very comfortable. There is a number of surf schools, equipment rentals and outfitters that can accommodate the needs of both beginners and experts for the Ucluelet surfing experience!
